Check out three simple rules that can help you pick out your next favorite piece of clothing instead of your next Goodwill donation…
When I start my seasonal process of shopping, I always start with inspirations. I clip pictures from magazines, go online to my favorite shops and check out their “look books” (styling handbooks for their current/next season), and sometimes, when I can find the time, I go to stores and see how they have dressed their mannequins. I get a visual of what I want to add to my current closet. But before you hand over the plastic, head home and follow my next three steps so you don’t end up buying things you will never wear.
- After you have a pretty clear picture of what you want for your next-season purchases, write them down and make a list. This will help you stay focused on what you really want so you can avoid impulse buys.
- Head into your closet and try to match your dream items with things in your current wardrobe. This rule guarantees you will get more wear out of your new pieces.
- Finally, determine whether or not your dream items are classic pieces you see yourself wearing for a long time or just a fun trend you want to try out. For classic pieces, I always suggest spending more money for better quality, but that doesn’t mean they can’t come from Target! For more trendy pieces, I would shop at less expensive places, such as TJ Maxx or Marshalls, which tend to steer more toward trending styles anyway.
