The Single Gal — Sigh...Valentine's Day

Sigh... is it Valentine's Day again?

During my 20's, I considered Valentine's Day to be a reviled "fake" holiday for single people like myself.

Then I met someone.

I was 35 at the time, and rather desperate to be in a relationship. He sent a beautiful vase of flowers to me on Valentine’s Day, and I could hardly contain my happiness. I had a boyfriend—and just in time for Valentine’s Day. Within a few months of dating him, I realized I couldn’t have a normal relationship with someone who depended on his mom financially and who couldn’t keep a job. After the breakup, my outlook on relationships changed. Yes, having a man in your life is wonderful, and it is even better if you can share many Valentine’s Day holidays with him, but sharing your time with the right person is what matters most.

Now, I believe Valentine’s Day is about celebrating the special person who has rightfully won your heart. But if you are wasting your time on someone who isn’t deserving of you, then you really don’t have a Valentine. This month—and every month—I take comfort in knowing that although I am single, at least I’m not in an unhappy relationship. Plus, I can always count on my brother to give me a long stem rose and box of off-brand chocolates every year. Though I've often wondered why he can't spring for Godiva or Russell Stover, but then again, beggars can't be choosers. Let the celebration begin!
