Looking for a short getaway yet this summer? Our Girls Just Want To Have Fun panel voted on several regional getaways. Here is our winner and two finalists.
Winner: French Lick Resort
Since 1845, French Lick Springs has been a getaway for health benefits. French Lick and West Baden, Ind., were transformed into French Lick Resort, a world-class facility complete with two hotels. Now you can find European-modeled spas, a casino, four golf courses, dining, and shopping.
Main Attraction
Combined, the two historic hotels offer almost 700 rooms including specialty and junior suites as well as seven premium suites with Jacuzzi tubs, hardwood floors, and large separate dining rooms, and period furniture. Many of West Baden’s rooms offer balconies with spectacular views of the atrium, domed courtyard, and manicured gardens. There is even a library offering books, magazines, and personal computers for guest use. The one-of-a-kind domed Atrium, which spans 200 feet, was once dubbed as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.”
You’ll enjoy...
Once you’ve had your fun at the casino or one of their 16 restaurants, head over to the spa to relax. French Lick offers two world-class spas complete with 24 treatment rooms, indoor pools and hot tubs, and a variety of services to help you unwind and relax.
What else you’ll do...
If you’re looking for more adventure rather than tranquility, French Lick offers horse-back riding, miles of mountain biking, and hiking trails. The Vegas-style casino has more than 1,200 slot machines, 38 game tables, and live shows.Finalist: Huber's Orchard, Winery & Vineyards
At Huber’s Orchard, Winery, & Vineyards, located at 19816 Huber Road in Starlight, Ind., guests can enjoy a visit to the farm market where they can purchase homegrown fruits and vegetables, sample wines from a list of over 30 award winners, order a sandwich or oven-fresh pizza from the Starlight CafĂ©.
“Virtually everything in the bottle, we grow! With over 70 acres of vineyards, the reason that our wines are such high quality is due to the fact that we have control over the growing and harvesting process which results in the highest quality of wines and ultimately leads to many award winners,” says Dana Huber, who handles the marketing and public relations at Huber’s Orchard, Winery, & Vineyards.
One local summertime favorite for guests is the variety of fruit sangrias, including strawberry, blackberry, and peach sangria. Huber’s sangria is made from all of their own wine products and the brandy they produce from their own Starlight Distillery.
Finalist: Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest
A 30-minute drive from Louisville, Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, located at 2499 Clermont Road in Clermont, Ky., embodies natural beauty and tranquility. Bernheim covers more than 14,000 acres and 23 square miles — the size of Manhattan!
One of most popular sights to see at Bernheim is the Canopy Tree Walk, a platform that extends onto a slope extending 70 feet above ground level amongst the canopy trees. Also, Elm Lick Trail is a fan favorite which is a new and challenging five-mile trail for those who are looking to be adventurous.
In addition to the 40 miles of trails, which also includes a seven-mile biking trail, they offer a variety of programs and activities for people of all ages. Some of these include Tai Chi, moon night hikes, poetry reading, and smart gardening and landscaping classes. Art can also be found throughout this natural place. Patrick Dougherty’s “Snake Hollow” is located at Bernheim which is a sculpture made entirely of willow branches.
