An Electrician For the Heart: Get to know Dr. Brad Sutton

Dr. Brad Sutton

Dr. Brad Sutton, one of the stars of our Men In White feature this month, is a staff Cardiac Electrophysiologist at the University of Louisville. He describes himself as an “electrician for the heart” though there is a lot more to this man than just that.

He implants pacemakers and defibrillators to keep patients’ hearts beating strong and corrects abnormal heart rhythms. But outside of his clinical work, Dr. Sutton devotes his time to figuring out how physicians can make healthcare reform more beneficial for patients. Dr. Sutton is developing the Center for Health Process Innovation with the intent of examining what does and doesn’t work in patient care.

“What I am advocating for in an academic setting is to study the way we do what we do in terms of healthcare reform, just like we would with a new drug or device or anything else we do to patients that is very well-studied and validated,” he says.

Providing cost-effective care for patients is another primary focus for Dr. Sutton. “I hope to empower the next generation of physicians to understand the economic impact of the decisions they make and how to be good stewards of our healthcare dollars.”
