Arts Insider Pick of the Week: Kacey Musgraves

Singer and songwriter Kacey Musgraves, recipient of the 2013 CMA New Artist of the Year and 2014 Song of the Year awards, is headlining her first tour, having opened for performers including Willie Nelson, Kenny Chesney, and Katy Perry. After listening to the 24-year-old’s first album, “Same Trailer Different Park” (Mercury Records), it’s clear that this girl has something to say.

A true language artist, Musgraves nimbly spins webs of words to create the quirky puns, shrewd metaphors, and steely ironies that fill her record. It’s no surprise to learn that when she was growing up in Golden, Texas, one of Musgraves’ favorite subjects was creative writing.

Musgraves made her public singing debut at church when she was around 8 years old. From there, she hit the regional opry circuit. “In Texas, every few towns have an opry house,” she says. “Performers come up on stage and sing old country songs with a live band. I did that every weekend. It got me familiar with being in front of people and working with musicians.”
