Val Caniparoli’s A Cinderella Story
Louisville Ballet

The Arts Insider wouldn’t dream of missing Val Caniparoli’s A Cinderella Story, first choreographed for Royal Winnipeg Ballet in 2004 and featuring a dynamic 1950s modern set and vintage ’50s couture-inspired costumes. Set to an original jazz score by Ron Paley from the Richard Rodgers songbook, nine Louisville Orchestra musicians, led by Mr. Paley, will play live for each performance. In this retelling, “Cinderella” is Nancy, her prince is Bob, and they meet for the first time in an Arthur Murray Dance Studio! Caniparoli’s choreography infuses ballet with ballroom and Broadway, resulting in a program filled with stylish retro fun.

Louisville Ballet audiences know Val Caniparoli’s choreography from several previously staged works, including Lambarena, The Seasons, Spaghetti Western and The Brown-Forman Nutcracker, which premiered in 2009. Mr. Caniparoli’s versatility has made him one of the most sought-after choreographers in the United States and abroad.

Caniparoli has contributed to the repertories of more than 45 companies, including Joffrey Ballet, Scottish Ballet, Boston Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Northern Ballet Theatre, among many others. However, he is most closely associated with San Francisco Ballet, where the former resident choreographer made his artistic home for more than 40 years.
