"I'm that other-side-of-the-brain person"

Can we call her a one-woman circus? Kelsey Starks seems to do it all and still looks amazing! We love this local news gal who just so happens to be our Most Admired Woman 2015 Media category winner. See more about how she dances (and shower-sings) through life.

Today's Woman: What would you have wanted to do if not this?
Kelsey Starks: I was always drawn to the creativity of television and broadcast, and I would have loved to have produced or directed a movie or a Broadway show.  And I’ve always had such admiration for doctors and nurses. I would have loved to do something in health care, but I can’t do math or science. I’m that other side-of-the-brain person, whichever one is not good in math.

TW: Where do you get your positive attitude?
KS: A lot of of it, honestly, comes from my parents. They are two of the most positive people that I’ve ever met in my life, and I’m very close with them. They are my biggest supporters and my biggest inspiration and always have the best advice. The older I grow the more I realize they’re always right. Always! I don’t know how they always know, but I’m very lucky to be close with them.

TW: What are you currently struggling with?
KS: The lack of sleep is always a struggle. Also, I’m a planner, and I like to know what’s coming next. But since I’ve become a mom I think I’ve learned to let go of that a little bit because with kids, all bets are off. Still, I’d love to know what I will be doing five years from now, and I have no idea. That’s exciting and scary, but it’s something I’m kind of learning to come to terms with.

TW: What do you want to learn or get better at?
KS: Gosh, I would love to learn all kinds of things. I used to be a dancer, all the way from 3-years-old through my senior year of high school. That was a really big part of my life and really helped instill in me confidence and ambition and discipline and time management. I would love to dance again. And I wish I could sing. I love doing it, but I’m horrible! I will sing karaoke, and I sing in my car and in the shower, but it isn’t a thing that anybody should ever hear. I probably shouldn’t be doing it at karaoke, either.

TW: What would you do if you had unlimited time and money?
KS: I’d like to spend time with my family, at the beach, just sitting and relaxing and doing nothing! I’m sure it would be different if I weren’t so tired all the time, but right now that’s probably what I’d most like to do. And I can’t imagine anything better than being with my kids and seeing all these milestones right now.

TW: What do you like about living in Louisville?
KS: It has all of the big-city aspects of some of the places I’ve lived. The restaurants, the Broadway series that comes here –  those are the things I loved about living in New York, but could never afford to do while I lived there. And being close to family has just been huge, especially now that I have two kids and a third on the way. My mom has moved here from Owensboro, and we live down the street from each other now. It’s awesome! I’m just very lucky to be able to have the best of both worlds.

TW: Do you have a personal motto?
KS: I probably should have a motto. Maybe “Everything happens for a reason” – I use that a lot. This is not at all the path I’ve imagined myself taking, even in this business, but looking back now I feel like it’s really worked out how it’s supposed to. The older I get the more I realize that it will work out. Maybe not the way you expected, and maybe not the way you wanted, but it will work out.
