Inside the Art Deco Home

By Anna Oldham and Melissa Donald

The couple's living room embodies all of the art deco elements. Photos by Melissa Donald

We focused on the outside of Tish and Stephen Geftos house last month — read it here.
But while we were there, our photographer paused to take a few inside shots of their art deco home remodel. “Together, we have a pretty good knack for ignoring bad decor and seeing the potential of a house,” Stephen says.

These Art deco style coasters, authentic cigarette case, dog figurines and other home accessories are a nice finishing touch. The Greek espresso cups are on a credenza in their formal dining room.

Tish’s advice to those thinking about a remodel: “Do your research. That’s how you know what you want, how you gain the knowledge. Read, watch remodeling shows, go to open houses. You need to think about resale value. Don’t be scared to tell [contractors] what you want, but consult their expertise. They don’t know what you want — work with them. Communicate with them.”

The sun design over the front door in their living room is another art deco feature.

For their guest bedroom, they searched for bedding with complimentary geometric patterns for a modern art deco look. Tish used art deco erte notecards to make these two pictures which hang on their bathroom wall.
"The larger picture (left) is a reproduction of a McCall's magazine cover from 1921 which is the same year our house was built. We found it at an antique shop in Madison, Indiana," Tish says.
The homeowners designed the backsplash which was inspired by an art deco design and changed the kitchen cabinet hardware to reflect the same type of style.

Will you be doing any renovations soon? Where do you get inspiration from when decorating your home?
