Diana Krall's latest (and 14th) album, Turn Up the Quiet, celebrates jazz and The Great American Songbook. The Nanaimo, British Columbia, native is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Album chart. To date, the albums from the pianist/singer have garnered five Grammy® Awards and eight Juno® Awards; also earning her nine gold, three platinum, and seven multi-platinum album distinctions. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most acclaimed artists of our time. The Arts Insider has attended every one of Krall’s Louisville dates, reaching back to 2002, when I interviewed this quiet spoken, reflective, and also charming artist. I can’t recommend Krall’s music highly enough.

Jessica Lang Dance
The Kentucky Center

New York-based Jessica Lang Dance is dedicated to creating and performing the work of Jessica Lang (a former dancer with Twyla Tharp), who was hailed as "a master of visual composition" by Dance Magazine. The recipient of a 2014 Bessie Award, Jessica Lang Dance makes its Kentucky Center debut with a repertoire rich with stunning movement, compelling visuals, and beautiful cinematic composition. The program is set to include Lang’s Thousand Yard Stare, a work embodying the incredible pride, honor, and searing loss experienced by military veterans, set to a late Beethoven string quartet.

Giselle
Louisville Ballet

One of the most beloved and beautiful ballets in the classical canon, Giselle closes the Louisville Ballet’s 2017/18 season. Giselle is the classic tale of love, betrayal, forgiveness, and redemption. It begins with the budding love between Giselle and Albrecht, only to be followed by his heartbreaking betrayal, which drives Giselle mad and sends her to her grave. Ultimately, though, the power of true love prevails, allowing Giselle to forgive Albrecht and save him from death at the hands of Myrtha, the Queen of the Wilis.
This adaptation of Giselle features classic choreography by Marius Petipa with updates by Louisville Ballet’s Artistic and Executive Director Robert Curran, and Louisville Ballet’s Senior Ballet Master Harald Uwe Kern.
Giselle features scenic designs by Peter Cazalet, known in Louisville as the scenic and costume designer for The Brown-Forman Nutcracker. Cazalet’s timeless designs were created specifically for Louisville Ballet’s Giselle, as well as the costumes created by David Heuvel.
Louisville Ballet last staged Giselle in 2014 featuring these scenic and costume designs, but with different choreography.

Men are From Mars – Women are From Venus LIVE!

This light-hearted one-man fusion of theater and stand-up is based off the book by the same name, a 1992 New York Times #1 best-selling hit by John Gray. The show began in Paris in 2007 and went on to become an Off-Broadway hit before becoming a theatrical success all over the world. Much like its namesake, this show explores the differences between the sexes through a series of vignettes that capture a wide range of relatable topics from dating to marriage.

Mambo Kings
Louisville Orchestra Pops Series

The Arts Insider admits to being psyched from the get-go at the idea of hearing this band (formed in 1995) live, after seeing them described as ‘a fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythm and contemporary jazz,’ which was evident after watching just 10 minutes of Mambo Kings in concert on YouTube. In other words, think of music where Tito Puente meets Dave Brubeck.
The Mambo Kings’ performance will feature original arrangements and compositions of music from the U.S., Perú, Argentina, Cuba, and Puerto Rico.

A Christmas Carol: The Musical
Derby Dinner Playhouse
In this musical adaptation of Charles Dickens's most well-known story (which was performed at New York’s Madison Square Garden every December from 1994-2003), Ebenezer Scrooge is a prosperous curmudgeon who believes that personal wealth is far more valuable than the happiness and comfort of others. With an infuriated "Bah! Humbug!," Scrooge is forced to face his selfish ways when three ghosts visit on Christmas Eve and lead him through his Past, Present, and Future. Thanks to their guidance, Scrooge recognizes his faults and greets Christmas morning with cheer before spending the day reconnecting and sharing love with those who mean the most to him.

Travis Wall’s Shaping Sound: After the Curtain
The Brown Theatre

Shaping Sound was established in Los Angeles in 2012 with a focus on contemporary dance and choreographic artistry. The company is an evocative collaboration by diverse artists who describe themselves as ‘visual musicians’ i.e. their dance gives shape and form to sound. Shaping Sound has impacted audiences with a unique fusion of jazz, modern, and hip-hop choreography. After The Curtain tells the story of a man fighting to find his creative voice after the death of his one true love.
Travis Wall, artistic director, was the runner-up for the Fox reality show So You Think You Can Dance season 2, and is currently a resident choreographer for the national dance competition show. Wall is also a five-time Emmy nominated choreographer for his work on So You Think You Can Dance and ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.

“A country Barry White,” wrote Blender magazine about Josh Turner. Inspired by Hank Williams, Turner gives a gospel-blues, country feel while bringing his rich baritone right to the front. His voice and musical style has often been compared to that of Johnny Cash. From his 2003 platinum-selling debut Long Black Train, to his most recent 2017 Billboard No. 1 release, Deep South, Turner’s hits include Your Man, Why Don’t We Just Dance, Firecracker, Would You Go with Me, All Over Me, and Time is Love, the most played country song of 2012. *The Hannah, South Carolina, native was the Arts Insider’s October 2010 Today’s Woman interview subject (titled Blue-Eyed Country Soul).
