Derby and Oaks can’t come soon enough! Here are some tips for keeping on point with your Derby and Oaks attire and how to really get into the festivities.

- Get Creative! Louisville, by nature, is an eclectic place and has dozens of shops to get a creative and original hat. There are lots of hat makers in the area as well. Stay local and help support our community!
- Check the weather. Sometimes we aren’t very lucky in the weather department, so when shopping for your shoes and dress, make sure you are aware of what the environment might feel like. Sweaty is never chic!
- When all else fails…go classic. Classic black and white, navy or stripes… The Derby and Oaks are old, classic events, so when in doubt, staying within neutral boundaries.

- Break in a new pair of shoes! One of the biggest mistakes women make at these events is shoe choice. You will be standing and walking around on cobblestone for a long time… I mean, a LONG time. Choosing a wedge heel or keeping a pair of ballet flats tucked in your clutch are wise choices.
- Choose a dress that is too short or tight. The last thing you want to be constantly worried about is how you will bend over or if you will be able to breath after a meal! Save those dresses or outfits for an event that isn’t all day or outside.
- Be afraid to be original! The Derby festivals are a time to be original and yourself. Create your own hat or let someone custom-make one for your outfit! This is the time to be spontaneous. Being original is always in!
