Louisville’s Wendy Whelan, principal dancer with the New York City Ballet for 25 years, explores diverse movement landscapes in Restless Creature, a series of four duets with choreographers Kyle Abraham, Joshua Beamish, Brian Brooks and Alejandro Cerrudo. The evening-long work consists of four duets Whelan commissioned from the four choreographers, each piece danced by Whelan and its maker.
"It’s hard to think of another woman who could dance these pieces, by four different choreographers, half so strikingly. Everything about her is riveting, interesting, unusual, and intelligent.” - Alastair Macaulay, The New York Times
Whelan began her dance training at the age of three with a local dance teacher. After performing as a mouse in the Louisville Ballet’s The Nutcracker, she joined the Louisville Ballet Academy where she began formal training. In 1981, she received a scholarship to the summer course at the School of American Ballet in New York City, joining as a full-time student a year later. Whelan went on to spend her professional career at the New York City Ballet, a career that spanned 30 years until her retirement from the company in October of 2014.
Restless Creature had its world premiere at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in August 2013 to critical acclaim.
