Ask Alissa: Help! The gingham trend screams childish to me. How do I style it maturely?

While gingham is definitely in this season, for some it can be a little too girly and even childish-looking. This is because the print is commonly seen in bold, bright colors such as blues, pinks, greens and the like, giving it an unfair reputation. But there are several ways to style gingham to make it look more sophisticated and grown-up. A lot of readers have been asking me how can they stay on trend but be true to their style. Here’s how to take gingham from preppy to mature...

I personally love this print because it’s classic, fun and versatile. You’ll find gingham in blouses, skirts, pants, shorts and even jackets. Like I mentioned, it is most commonly seen in bright colors, which can make it seem little-girl-like. If you struggle with bold colors, look for the print in a more muted color. Above, online shop and blog Mindy Mae’s Market styles a navy gingham shirt with white denim and casual brown sandals. There is nothing overly girly about this look, but it’s still right on trend.

Below, Mindy Mae’s Market styled gingham with a safari feel. I love this look! It’s down-to-earth and uber stylish but perfect for that laid-back summer look. Here, the gingham print is in a soft, neutral color, which won’t scream preppy or childish. When paired with army green shorts, this look is casually chic and mature.
