This Runner Goes the Extra Mile to Look Her Best

By Brigid Morrissey

Yvonne Austin creates a theme to live by at the beginning of each year. This year, her theme is passion and compassion. One of her passions is running, and she loves connecting with new people. As a former race ambassador for the Kentucky Derby Marathon and a current Bourbonite for the Urban Bourbon Half Marathon scheduled for October, Yvonne found the solution to combining both. “Running is defined as ‘anything you do at a faster pace than walking.’ I am compassionate about meeting people where they are, which means I run at their pace, starting and ending with them. It’s more of a hardship while I’m actually running, but the feeling I get when I cross the finish line is incomparable. To cross with others and to understand where they’re coming from is really energizing. I get to see the joy and the sense of accomplishment, and in some small way I played a part in that.”

Who’s Keeping Track of the Marathon Data?

Kay Russell is wearing: Hat by Dee’s, $279, 5045 Shelbyville Road, 502.896.6755; dress, $149 available at Talbot’s 194 N. Hurstbourne Parkway, 502.423.9445; necklace, $42, bracelet, $18 available at Magnolia & Fig 12621 Shelbyville Road, 502.253.4567. Kellen Russell is wearing: Hat by Christine A. Moore Millinery, $730 available at Rodes For Her 4938 Brownsboro Road 502.753.7633; dress, $46, belt, $16, earrings, $16, bracelets $16/ea. available at Magnolia & Fig, 12621 Shelbyville Road 502.253.4567.

Kay Russell started working with the Kentucky Derby Festival 26 years ago, and took her baby girl with her. “I’m what they call a ‘Festival Baby,’” says Kellen Russell, who is graduating from University of Kentucky this spring.

Kathy Bingham’s Survival Skills for Running the Fillies

By Megan S. Willman

With more than 100 women at The Fillies’ meetings, I asked Fillies President Kathy Bingham if she found it difficult to step in as its leader. “When I agree to do something, I give it all I have. I love to talk to people and am willing to explore all sides of an issue. Sometimes, though, I do have to put on my warden voice,” says Kathy with a laugh.

Arts Insider: Lucie Arnaz, An Original

”I’ve never been to the Kentucky Derby before and am very excited about attending this year’s race! And as a matter of fact, as I’m talking to you for this interview from the lobby of The Carlyle Hotel, I’m standing directly under a beautiful portrait of a racehorse.” -actress/singer Lucie Arnaz

By Gioia Patton

I can’t help but be impressed by the show business career Lucie Arnaz has forged for herself in the 45 years since she began acting professionally in 1962. She started acting at age 12 with a recurring role on television’s The Lucy Show opposite her mother, Lucille Ball, followed by six years as a series regular on Here’s Lucy during its 1968-’74 run.
